Edwardsville native Stephen Pifer's quest for a berth on the United States Olympic team ended Friday when he placed seventh in a semifinal heat of the 1,500 meters at the United States Olympic track and field Trials in Eugene, Ore.
Edwardsville native Stephen Pifer and Belleville West graduate Liz Wanless advanced Thursday at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials. Pifer is competing in the 1,500-meter trials, Wanless in the shotput, each hoping to earn an Olympic berth that will send them to Beijing next month.

The Incarnate Word Red Knights made their annual trip to the Blue Storm Girls Basketball Tournament a successful one on Sunday at the Family Sportsplex.
For 3 1/2 years, former NFL player Craig Heimburger woke up every day feeling like something was missing from his life. "When you've played football for so many years, the first thing you do when you wake up is think about the day ahead of you, and you realize there's no football in the day," said Heimburger, a graduate of Belleville East High School.

As Jake Odorizzi sat with his teammates at GCS Ballpark in Sauget on Tuesday night, two young boys stopped and stared. "Is that him?" one of them asked. "Yeah, it's him," said his buddy. "Maybe we can get his autograph," said the first as the pair sprinted off to find a writing utensil.
